Monmouth occupies a gently rolling area on the west side of the mid-Willamette Valley in central Polk County, immediately west of Independence. The terrain is slightly more elevated than the river-bottom land in Independence, with better natural drainage on most residential parcels. Soils in the Monmouth area are predominantly Woodburn silt loam and Amity silt loam, both common Willamette Valley soils that are workable for construction but can become saturated during the wet season.
