Dallas occupies a gentle valley at the base of the Coast Range foothills in central Polk County. The city's terrain is more varied than the flat Willamette Valley floor to the east, with rolling hills, moderate slopes, and creek drainages that influence construction planning. Soils in the Dallas area include Bellpine silty clay loam on the hillsides and Woodburn silt loam on the valley floor, a combination that requires careful attention to drainage and foundation engineering.
